Going the Extra Mile(s): Supporting SmartNet Football, Denver to Pittsburgh
Boris Van Kroonenburg, our project manager, flew into Denver last week to join J.R. Dodson, founder of SmartNet Football, for the next leg of the SmartNet demo tour. Three days, about 700 miles, one RV, straight through to Pittsburgh.
SmartNet turns a normal goal into a training tool. LED zones light up on the frame, a camera tracks each shot, and the player gets accuracy, power, and progress data right away instead of guessing whether the session did anything. The idea started with an NCAA coach who was tired of finishing drills that gave players nothing to go on — you can hit a hundred balls and still not know if you're improving.
Building that is one thing. Keeping it working outside a lab is another. A shot-tracking system that's accurate under controlled lighting on a home field can behave differently on a different field, in different weather, set up by a different crew in twenty minutes before a session starts.
That's what the road trip tested. Loading gear, driving for hours, unloading, setting up somewhere new, running the session, then doing it again the next day, with no do-overs if something didn't calibrate right. It ran clean at every stop. That's a good result, and we are proud of this collaboration.
